FAQ Eyelash Extensions

The most important tip for you getting the maximum lashes applied in your appointment time is: Arrive ON TIME with CLEAN freshly washed eye lashes!

What is semi-permanent Eyelash Extensions?

Individual eyelash extensions are similar to your natural lashes, which allow them to appear realistic. Only individual eyelashes give a natural, full look. They are comfortable, long lasting and light weight. The lashes are attached to each individual lash, one lash at a time.

In one session, 50-100 lashes per eye are applied for a FULL-SET.
  • Single lashes made of Synthetic Silk or natural mink hair are glued to an individual natural eyelash. Using this method, eyelashes should not be clumped together and the natural lash is free to fall out at the end of it's hair cycle.
  • An extension will remain on the natural lash depending on the adhesive bond (from 2-6 weeks) or it's stage in the cycle.
  • Fills can extend your lash extensions indefinetly and are recommended  every 2-4 weeks.

Another type of extensions are cluster lashes: one cluster of several knotted lashes glued ontop of several natural lashes (do not confuse this with Volume lashes). To fill the lash line multiple clusters are glued on These are considered temporary and should be removed in a week. When multiple natural lashes are glued together, this can become uncomfortable since the hairs are growing at different rates and/or fallen lashes are still glued to adjacent growing hairs. Cluster lashes cannot be filled without damage occuring to your natural lashes. A removal and new set is needed if, the look it to be maintained.

How do you maintain the Extension?

  • For the first 24 hours, do not get them soaking wet with water, steam or sweat; this ensures a proper long lasting bond.
  • Try not to wear mascara or rub your eyes in the first 24 hours.
  • When taking a shower, do not let the force of the water hit your lashes.
  • Do clean the lashes every night with a oil free cleanser (eg. tear-free baby shampoo recipe). This is especially important, if you wear eye makeup!!!
  • Only use oil free make-up or make-up remover on your eyes. Oils will eventually break the bonds of the glue.
  • If you wish to use clear or colored mascara, make sure it's NOT waterproof.
  • Feel free to brush your eyelash extensions with a clean mascara wand or brush, especially after waking up. Do not use lash curlers since this may break the bond between the lash and extension.
  • Please do not try to pull off the extensions, this will most likely pluck out your natural eyelash. If you wish to have them removed, make an appointment for a Removal.

Why are fills necessary?

The natural hair cycle of an eyelash is approx 3-6 weeks and mutiple stages of the hair cycle are continually happening (or we would have no eyelashes several times a year!). As natural lashes fall out, many will have a synthetic lash glued to it and they will have to be replaced if, the look is to be maintained.

Fills should be done within 2-4 weeks. Beyond the 4+ week mark, there will be obvious gaps and one may be charged a full set depending on how many original lash extensions remain.

I need a fill. How much time should I choose?

I offer timed appointments much like electrolysis appointments. Here are some hints and tips to help you choose which amount to pick:

  • Think about how long your initial set took. For a typical lash set I book 2 hours for actual lashing (this may or may not include cleaning depending how long the consultation and paperwork took).
  • How many lashes do you have remaining for fill appointment? 50% lashes remaining is the ideal time to rebook for a fill. So if you have 50% lashes to refill, you should need approx 1 hour for a regular fill.
  • The minimum % of lashes remaining before you would need a NEW set is 25%. Book for the maximum fill time for your regular fill. This may not be enougn time to bring your set back to the original fullness and you may need to return a week or two earlier to get back to the original set.
  • You can book for less time than you need, but be aware it will look sparser than the original set.
Please arrive on time with cleaned lashes to get the most lashes applied. I need to clean the lashed before applying and if there is makeup, oils and buildup in between lashes I need to spend time "de-junking" them and this eats up your lashing application time.

Anything I should be aware of for my appointment?

  • For your appointment come in with no eye makeup, if this is not possible I can remove it for you. Be aware that this will take time away from applying the lashes. Arrive early to wash off your eye makeup in the washroom, if you wish.
  • If you wear contacts, remove them before appointment and wear eye glasses for the first 24 hours.
  • Schedule your appointment in mind that you cannot expose the lashes to water, steam or sweat for 24 hours.
  • The procedure is very intricate and detailed, so it takes time. The appointment will take anywhere from 1 to 3 hours depending on fill or new set. Wear a comfortable hairstyle (eg. no ponytail) and bring music with ear buds.
  • Once the application has started, you won't be able to open your eyes until the glue has set. This means answering your cell, eating or going to the washroom will few and far between.
  • Expect lots of compliments on your new beautiful lashes!

Is the Eyelash Extensions harmful to the eyes or lashes?

Not at all:

  • If proper materials and technique is used.
  • If the lash extensions are removed professionally. If they are forcefully pulled off, the natural lash will be broken or pluck out taking weeks to regrow.
  • Cleansing the lashes every night will prevent possiblities of infections/irritations.
  • If you are sensitive to cosmetic products, please let the technician know and a 24 hour test patch can be done at a consultation.

I want maximum length and thickness for my lashes. What can I expect?

To maintain your natural lash integrity, I will only apply a synthetic lash length up to a maximum of 50% of your natural lash length (example: your natural lash is 10mm long. The extension can be up to 15mm long depending on extension diameter/thickness). The diameter/thickness of a single eyelash extension will be determined by your own natural lash diameter. I can put on a thicker diameter lash if desired, but the length will need to be shorter than 50% of the natural lash.

Real mink and synthetics (with thinner diameters) are lighter and can exceed the 50% rule.

For special occasions or one time applications, I can exceed the 50% rule. Please be aware that the next fill will return to a shorter or thinner lash extension.

Why are my lashes falling out? Is this normal?

Expect to see several lashes falling out every day due to the natural hair cycle. Most, but not all, of these lashes should have your natural lash attached to it. If you are finding most of your lash extensions falling out without a natural lash attached to it, there can be a number of explainations.

  1. the glue bond has been broken due to force (such as curling lashes, rubbing eyes, playing with lashes, repeated side-sleeping or laying on ones' side to watch TV, ect.).
  2. the glue bond has been weakend due excessive exposure to water, sweat, steam and/or oils (natural or creams/moisturizers). An active lifestyle or heavy makeup use or naturaly oily skin may shorten the lifespan of your lash extensions.
  3. The glue bond is coming to the end of its life-span which varies from 2-6 weeks. Come in sooner for fills.
  4. If we need to use an adhesive for sensitive eyes, the bond has a shorter life-span of about 2 weeks.

We have many types of lash extensions and lash adhesives at L'amour Lashes. Trying various combinations will help to find you the longest lasting lashes for your lifestyle. Fills may be required at shorter intervals.

What is the baby shampoo recipe?

You will need to buy a tear-free oil-free baby shampoo, a soap foamer, baking soda and distilled water (optional)

  1. Fill the clean empty soap foamer with 1/4 baby shampoo
  2. Add 1 teaspoon of baking soda
  3. Fill up the bottle with distilled water or tap water

Use 1 to 2 txs a day: pump out the cleanser either onto your fingers or mascara spoolie and gently run the cleanser through your lashes and rinse.

The baby shampoo cleanser is to keep the lashes clean from natural oils/secretions and bacteria, it is not effective in removing all cosmetic eye makeup. If you notice makeup remains after washing with baby shampoo, you will need a seperate eye makeup cleanser.

Note: it is not recommended to wash your lashes with 100% baby shampoo. It will need to be diluted with water first when using around eyes.

I only have several lash extensions left on my lashes. Now what?

If there are only several extensions left on each eye, it's time for a brand new lash set. There may be a new set discount for you if, you originally got the set here at L'amour Lashes.

Next time come back sooner for a fill.
